- Laura moved in with her second host family, Howard and Jean Rigdon, on Sunday. We are still in need of a third host family. 2011-2012 marks the 27th consecutive year that Ripon Rotary will have hosted a youth exchange student.
- Remember to contact Jim Gelhar if you will be able to involve our inbounder in some of your personal activities. Sign up for a month in which you will get find activities that you can involve the student in. Think of something you can do to get to know the inbound student better. Randy Zieth already taught Laura how to water ski.
- Tom Avery will be needing volunteers for the January STRIVE meeting to work as mentors for individual STRIVE students as they develop their personal development profile plan. Tentative date is January 31st, but that may change.
- The Ripon noon Kiwanis will be holding its Tuesday January 10th meeting at Royal Ridges. Congressman Thomas Petri will be the speaker. All Rotarians are invited to attend.
- Ripon Rotary Christmas Party will be held on Thursday evening January 12th at CJ’s at the Wayside. Dinner at 6:00. Chicken and Pot Roast buffet for $8.50, including tip and taxes. We will be doing the famous White Elephant Gift Exchange. We will have sign-up sheets the next two meetings.
- Red Kettle collections top last year - Ripon Head Ringer Rich Scamehorn reported in a thank you card to Randy Hatlen that the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign raised $15,120, and the total raised on the three shifts that Ripon Rotary rang bells was $1274.44. The goal for the year was $14,000. There were five week-ends in 2011, versus four in 2010. Randy Hatlen recognized and thanked everyone who took a two-hour shift ringing bells. We will need someone to coordinate the Rotary scheduling in 2012, as Kathy Ginder has moved on to Sin City. A special thanks to Rich Scamehorn of the Ripon Noon Kiwanis, who has chaired the Ripon effort for the past several years.
- Randy Hatlen also reported that the club received a thank you card from former member Ralph Quinney for the help from Ripon Rotary in delivering Santa Club gifts.
- Randy Hatlen talked about the possibility of donations to the new outdoor classroom being built at Murray Park/Quest. Kathy Schwandt questioned whether this might be a potential project for the 2012 District Simplified Grant.

Sgt. at Arms:
Candie Baker collected a number of fines and Happy Bucks. It cost your editor another dollar to go to the Rose Bowl. John Rockwood paid for having a tan; Marc DeGroot as well. Candie paid for having gone to Jamaica. She paid a total of twenty dollars if the club wouldn’t sing happy Birthday to her. Hank Grams for not leaving all of his money in Las Vegas. Lee Baird paid for Randy Hatlen and your scribe for helping him out for not being able to come up with a program, at least not on January 9th. A Happy Buck for the 41 people currently in Panama --- including Rotarians Kim Holliday, Peter Sensenbrenner and Rob Webster. Dr. Yeomans for being able to play golf in January, in Green Lake. Bob Amsden with an update on the American College Theater Festival, including an award winner from Ripon College. David Sakrison for being mentioned on Wisconsin Public radio, and with an update on Operation Migration. The cranes are currently in Alabama, waiting for clearance for the plane pilots to continue. Dr. Nelsen’s two sons from Kenya began school in Ripon today. Bill Boutwell for his, and Linda’s, 40th wedding anniversary. Adam Jacobi for his father (Jim) taking some of the responsibilities with the RHS forensic team, and his father for hoping to have a debate team at RHS next year for the first time in many years. Deano Pape promoting Great Conversations, a fundraiser for the Ripon Education Association, on February 18th; more information, and tickets, to follow next week. Greg Dragolovich won half of Spin-the-Wheel, and donated it back. More money for End Polio Your scribe held a contest asking the question, how many cases of polio were recorded worldwide in 2011? The answer was 620, down from 920 in 2010. President Randy Hatlen attempted to look up the answer in the Pulitzer Prize winning book, “Polio, an American Story.” The book was published in 2006, and I was asking for 2011 data. And Mr. Hatlen is an educator. Scary!
Program:
Given that we were not able to come up with a speaker for today, your scribe presented some information on upcoming district events with emphasis on the district conference scheduled at the Heidel House from April 27th to April 29th. More information, and requests, to follow.

RI Float in 2012 Tournament of Roses Parade:
The RI float in the 2012 Tournament of Roses parade won the Queen’s Trophy.
The description of the float in the parade program was as follows.
Rotary International “Inching Toward The End Of Polio” Phoenix Decorating Co.
“Inching Toward the End of Polio,” Rotary International’s 33rd consecutive float entry, represents the organization’s commitment to “service above self” and Rotarians’ dedication to eradicating polio worldwide. The float’s 22-foot-tall “inchworm” features a MD’s head mirror made with shiny, grey silverleaf and light grey lettuce seed, a stethoscope and a medical journal emblazoned with the caduceus. The inchworm’s 35-foot-long body features Christmas red, elfin, hot pink, yellow and white mums while white, fine-cut everlasting is used to create its white lab coat. In 1985, Rotarians could only imagine a world without polio, but in 2010 Rotary International launched its “This Close” campaign to emphasize the 99% reduction in polio cases worldwide to focus the world’s attention to the final stages and accomplishments of its campaign.
Respectfully submitted,
