Volume XXVII Issue #45 June 30, 2008 Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards. --- Sřren Kierkegaard Personally, I’m always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught. --- Winston Churchill The Ripon Rotary Changing of the Guard Dinner was held Monday evening at CJ’s at the Wayside with 34 members and 19 guests in attendance. Evidently the memo had been sent out to all members except your author to wear red Wisconsin Badgers clothes, and Dave Ginder had cut a CD of Wisconsin songs to play during cocktail hour as well. I would not have been able to comply in any case as I do not own any Wisconsin apparel. Videos being played during cocktail hour included a video of Janira’s year in the United States, the video of the group working in Panama this spring, and a montage of Ripon Rotary pictures that Laurie had put together. Guests were: Julie Born --- guest of husband Gary Gaylene Bradley --- guest of husband Doug Naomi Carley --- guest of husband Rich Alta Fischer --- guest of husband Armon Gladys Gray --- guest of husband Bob Deb Huber --- guest and girl friend of Tom (His wife couldn’t make it) Peter Kasuboski --- guest of wife Laurie (Peter would run with the bulls in Pamplona like Janira did, but he noted that he is not a Rotarian) Virginia Meierhofer – guest of daughter Laurie Peggy Krenz --- guest of daughter Nita Karen Larson --- guest of husband Chuck Janira Romero --- inbound exchange student from Barcelona, guest of your author. Janira was celebrating Spain’s win in the Euro cup the previous day. Hank Grams has had prefect attendance for every year he has been a member of Rotary. The Youth Protection Committee and the Ripon Rotary Foundation board were recognized for their service to the club. Youth protection now entails training certification at the district level, background checks in order to have one on one contact with any youth, and a written youth policy submitted for district approval on an annual basis. Youth Protection Committee members:
Diane Shady served as the contact person available to the inbound student if required. Ripon Rotary Foundation Board – the board is comprised of seven members, three appointed with the current president of the club appointing one member each year (it may be a renewal term for an existing member) and four club presidents going through a four year cycle. The board was set-up in this manner to allow the Foundation board, at the choosing of the club president, to be responsible for the long-range planning of the club.
For 2008-2009 Dave Ginder will join the board as president-elect for 2009-2010. The club president-elect automatically assumes the position of secretary. “Rik” Rikkers will replace Lee Baird for an at-large position on the board. Mr. Baird served a two year term on the board. Mr. Rikkers was president of the club in the late 1980’s when the Ripon Rotary Foundation was formed. The following members were recognized for their year of service on the board.
Doug Bradley, Laurie Kasuboski, and Tim Lyke are leaving the board. Garn Born introduced four new board members for 2008-2009.
In addition to the board members three other members were recognized.
Tom Worrall presented the Paul Harris Fellow award to Doug Bradley. Recognized by the club for his work with the STRIVE program. The club will donate $1000 to Rotary International in Doug’s name to honor his work. After listing the challenges that he left him with, Lee Prellwitz presented the gavel to Gary Born Specific challenges for the club include:
My favorite projects --- youth exchange + GSE --- possibility of joint research project with Kizzie from the Philippines, also a possibility of her coming to the US to teach for a year. Also, the youth exchange program. Anyone who did not find some activity that they could include Janira in this year missed out on a fun time. And we get continuing opportunities to serve as we start the next year:
David Sakrison then presented your author a Wisconsin cap, complete with Badger ears. Janira presented me with this giant reptile, famous in Spanish culture. Gary Born presented the past president plaque and pin to yours truly. And the levity broke out with more Wisconsin music; and a performance by three Wisconsin cheerleader wannabes --- Kim Holliday, Laurie Kasuboski, and Lori Rich. Ladies --- don’t give up your day jobs. A birthday cake was wheeled out as June 30th is David Sakrison’s birthday, and July 2nd is mine. Between the two of us we were able to blow the candles out on the first attempt. Unfortunately, that did not prevent the Ripon Rotary moron chorus from regaling us with a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday.” Dave Ginder presented your author with the CD of the Wisconsin music. Birthday cake for dessert, and five lucky people winning door prizes concluded the evenings activities. Five lucky people won door prizes to conclude the evening’s festivities. So long as we love we serve; so long as we are loved by others, I would almost say that we are indispensable; and no man is useless while he has a friend. --- Robert Louis Stevenson The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie --- deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth --- persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought. --- John F. Kennedy Respectfully submitted, |
