Volume XXVII Issue #39 May 12, 2008 Work saves us from three great evils: boredom, vice and need. – Voltaire The place to be every Monday at noon is at Royal Ridges when Ripon Rotary meets. Greeting and Prayer by Dr. Leroy Yeomans Two guests today: 1) Andy Worrall – son of Tom and about to enter his senior year at Marquette. Mr. Rockwood’s applause at the mention of Marquette may have been a tad excessive. 2) Aysia Platte – outbounder to Belgium in August. Attending the Rotary District conference in Lake Geneva this weekend. Announcements: 1) Last Friday was Breakfast with the Mayor and the Ripon STRIVE students. Approximately twenty students and seven Rotarians listened to Mayor Aaron Kramer, Representative Joan Ballweg and Superintendent of Schools Richard Zimman talk about the importance of education in the job market. The group also enjoyed breakfast, including, as Kim noted, lots of pancakes. 2) Dr. Richard Voss, back from Thailand by way of Arizona, reported on delivering a $500 check to the Thailand library for the purchase of additional books. 3) This Saturday is Hi-way Clean-up. Meet at Royal Ridges, we would use two more volunteers to help. Contact Laurie Kasuboski. 4) All Rotarians are invited to Janira’s graduation party in Green Lake on Sunday May 25th. Please let Tim Holz know if you plan on attending. 5) Wednesday evening is awards night at Ripon High School. Dave Ginder will present the Rotary scholarships. Names of the recipients will be listed in next week’s bulletin. 6) Also Wednesday evening Laurie Kasuboski and Gary Born (with an assist from Peter Sensenbrenner) will be traveling to West Bend to do a presentation on the Father Wally water project. The goal is to get it listed as a district project. 7) Nita Krenz, Lee Prellwitz and students Aysia Platte, Anna White and Janira Romero will be attending the District #6270 conference in Lake Geneva this weekend. 8) Ripon Chamber of Commerce Business Connection Tuesday May 13th from 5:00 to 7:00 at Royal Ridges, hosted by Royal Ridges and Comfort Suites. 9) Board meeting next Monday, May 19th at Royal Ridges at 10:55. Sgt.-at-Arms Rick Coles with a matching game on dates of upcoming Rotary events. All tables had a perfect score. The bad news – no money collected. The good news – we will have excellent attendance and no trouble getting volunteers for all events given that everybody knows the dates. Tom Worrall did a presentation on all post cards and covers, a hobby that he has enjoyed for years, and one that may have started because both his grandfather and his father served as postmasters. Many interesting pictures, including one of tea mogul Sir Thomas Lipton. Much debate over the location of certain buildings in Ripon, including what was once the high school. With neither Dr. Carley nor Mr. Gray present, many questions were asked of Dr. Yeomans concerning some of the older photographs and covers, some of which dated back to the early 1900s. Thank you Tom for sharing your hobby with the club, and for showing us how easy it is to forget the past if there is no documented record kept of it. Next Monday’s meeting will recognize the eight senior members of STRIVE from Ripon High School. The students and their parents will be our guests for the presentation. Please make every effort to attend. All men by nature desire knowledge. – Aristotle If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them. – Isaac Asimov Respectfully submitted, Lee Prellwitz – Substitute Scribe |
