Next week – Club Assembly - Following Week – Installation of 5 new members Program: Doug Bradley introduced Rollie Alger as “The Loon Ranger”. Rollie now lives on a small lake in Viles County and Doug has a cabin a few miles away. Rollie presented a very interesting program on his work with loons. IDENTIFICATION. The common loon measures nearly 3 feet and has a 5-foot wingspan. It is gray and white until four years of age, when it grows the elegant black and white breeding plumage for which it is famous. VOCALIZATION .Loons have four calls. The laugh-like tremolo is an alarm call, while the hoot reassures. The males’ high-pitched yodel is territorial: the mournful wail is a call to other loons. HABITS. Loons are expert divers, feeding on fish and aquatic invertebrates. They nest along the water’s edge and rear one or two chicks each summer. CONSERVATION. Protect natural shorelines, essential for suitable nesting habitat, and use lead-free fishing tackle like bismuth singers to reduce fatal lead poisoning. Rollie noticed a pair of loons on Green Lake. There were 3,400 adult loons in Wisconsin in 2005. They come back from their wintering along the South East Coast , as soon as the ice leaves our lakes. The males arrive first. The word loon is from a Scandinavian word for clumsy. They don’t walk well and must be within 5 feet of water. They feed on fish and need clear water. Thanks Doug & Rollie for this great program. P.S. Doug sold tickets $1.00 each and the winner of a Loon advice T-shirt, Rollie donated, was ME!! The proceeds were given to “Penny Annie”. Thanks Rollie, I’ll cherish the shirt. Next Week – Greeter & Prayer – A Board Member Program : Club Assembly – featuring Dr. Blake Waterhouse and a report on our Ripon Rotary Club Foundation. Thought for today: God – I sincerely desire to do what is good and right and to act responsibly. I look to You for Your love and guidance to show me the way. Amen. Some jobs have to be put off dozens of times before they completely slip your mind. Scribe – Rich Carley – 748-3391 |
