This was the Club's major project of 1981 -1992 and one to which a great amount of time and effort were devoted by the membership. The project organization included numerous committees, a general chairman, detailed planning, work schedules, and work assignments which could serve as a model for future large scale activities. The Travel and Adventure Series consisted of a series of narrated color motion picture films of picturesque and exciting countries or regions around the world. Each was narrated in person by the photographer who did the filming and thus gained first-hand impressions of the country and its people. Rotary chose the films for its series from a list of offerings by Windoes, a production company. Following a pattern outlined by Windoes, Rotary conducted all of the local work including ticket sales, advertising, publicity, program production, reserving the auditorium, etc. In the first series, films were presented on the Netherlands, Germany's Rhineland, France, the Canadian Arctic, and Hawaii - playing to audiences which averaged about 400 people for each of the five productions. The worth of this travelogue series lay primarily in its informative and constructive entertainment value to the community. It also gave public exposure to the Club and was generally regarded as a good public relations vehicle. At the same time, it was a good fund raiser, though not as efficient as some other method. The series was discontinued after a second year, as the monetary return did not warrant the effort. |
